Lady Bucs

Bartlett Yancey volleyball seniors recognized last week were (left to right) Alayna Crumpton, Faith Johnson, Kaitlan Oakley, Lizzie Proctor and Faith Upchurch.

Bartlett Yancey volleyball won the regular season conference title last week, defeating second place North Moore in straight sets on senior night and setting eyes on this week’s conference tournament.

Later in the week the Bucs iced the cake, knocking off conference foe Jordan Matthews (6-12, 5-7) 3-0 on the road to wrap up the regular season undefeated in the Mid Carolina 1A/2A Conference.

Coach Angela Ouzts lavished praise on her players, especially the five seniors. She also gave a nod to fans who turned out as the season unfolded.

“It’s more than just our team,” she said. “We have lots of support.”

The change of conferences this year also helped, she said, pointing out that BY is more competitive with the smaller school now in the league.

“I was excited to move to the new conference because I knew they would be successful,” said Ouzts.

The Bucs wrapped up the regular season 18-1 overall and 12-0 in the conference.

The team handily won the first two games in the best of five match against North Moore (16-7, 9-3) last week, defeating the Mustangs 25-6 and 25-9. North Moore, though, put up a fight in the third game before succumbing 25-19.

“I think we worked really hard to get where we’re at,” said Kayden Miller, a sophomore. She expects next year to be more of the same despite the loss of key seniors. “I think we have people who can step up and do their part.”

The Bucs earned shutouts in nine of their 12 conference games this season, winning each 3-0. They won the other three 3-1. They’re confident of their chances in the conference tournament, which begins Monday at Graham.

“I think we’ve got it,” said junior Kirsten Walker. “Our team plays hard.”

As conference champs, the Bucs had a first round bye. They were scheduled to play one of the first round winners 5 pm Tuesday. With a win they’d advance to the title game 6 pm Wednesday.
