Bartlett Yancey wrestlers beat up on a pair of conference foes to start last week’s competition, then finished the week with their best showing ever at the Jim King Orange Invitational, finishing seventh of 14 teams.

“We had a great week of wrestling,” coach Rick Hill wrote in an email.

During the Bucs’s first conference matches of the season they downed Chatham Central 54-18 and Graham 60-18, and are now 2-0 in the conference.

Six wrestlers won both their matches and are 2-0 in conference action. They are Paul Vogel at 120 pounds, Cameron Stokes at 132 pounds, Landon Pruitt at 160 pounds, Davonta Warren at 170 pounds, Dylan Wall at 195 pounds and Devon Thompson at 285 pounds.

“Devon and Dylan dominated opponents in their conference matches setting the tone for our other young wrestlers to follow,” Hill wrote.

At the Jim King, Wall battled to a second place finish and Thompson took a fourth. Both were state championship qualifiers last season.

Juniors Dakota Wall at 152 pounds and Paul Vogel, whom Hill called “the pleasant surprises of the tournament,” also made it to the podium, giving BY four medalists for the.

“Dakota and Paul saw some tough competition battling their way through their brackets,” Hill wrote. Dakota Wall, in a surprise, reversed his opponent for a pin and a third place finish. Vogel took fourth.

Hill called BY’s Jim King results “a great showing against great competition.”

In the tournament’s JV competition, Tyzavier Jay finished with two wins and a loss, and Dwayne Thompson and Nijay Parker both had a win.

To Hill, the “stars of the week” were Vogel and Dakota Wall.

“They had to battle through adversity throughout the day on Saturday and when we were headed back to the bus they both had their first pieces of hardware around their necks this season,” Hill wrote.
