On a day that began with storm clouds and rain and ended with the sun peeking its head out, Sydney Roberts of Chesnee, S.C., rose above the pack to take a two shot lead in the first round of the 65th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship.
Roberts fired a mark of 3-under-par 69 at the Par-72 Cherokee National Golf Club and made the turn in 1-under-par. Eight consecutive pars on the back nine saw her deadlocked in a tie for first, before a chip in eagle on the Par-5 18th hole vaulted her to the top of the leaderboard all by herself.
Roberts showed impressive poise as well, after sitting at 1-over-par through her first six, she clawed back with back-to-back birdies on the seventh and eighth holes, and after adding that eagle on the 18th wound up playing her last 12 holes in 4-under-par.
In the hunt and tied for second are Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C., and Macy Pate of Winston-Salem, N.C. Both players sit two shots back after carding 1-under-par 71’s.
Mathews got off to a hot start, collecting three birdies to just one bogey on her opening nine to turn in 2-under-par. Pate made her turn at even par, and would cruise to a 1-under-par back nine spurred on by birdies at the 10th, 12th, and 15th at Cherokee.
Rounding out the top five are Ella Perna of Durham, N.C., who sits in solo fourth at even par, while Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C., Anna Howerton of Winston-Salem, N.C., Madison Messimer of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Sophie Lauture of Charlotte, N.C., and Grace Holcomb of Wilmington, N.C., all sit in a tie for fifth at 1-over-par.
