Bartlett Yancey volleyball has been on a roll since its narrow early season loss to Eastern Alamance, and now shares the lead in the Mid-Carolina 1A/2A Conference.
“Overall,” said coach Angela Ouzts, “I'm really pleased with the start of the season.”
The Bucs (5-1, 2-0) began the week sitting atop the conference with North Moore (7-3, 1-0) and Jordan Matthews (1-3, 1-0). Chatham Central (2-6, 1-1) is nipping at their heals.
Ouzts sees Chatham Central and North Moore as the teams to beat in the conference this year.
“I feel as if they'll be pretty good competition,” she said. “We'll see.”
Her Bucs were scheduled to do battle with Chatham Central's Bears on Tuesday. They tangle with North Moore at home Sept. 15.
Ouzts expects her team will be prepared. They're talented, she said, with the depth to fill in where needed.
“They click well together,” she said. “They're hard workers. It's just kind of putting it together and hoping they have a good day.”
It's been a winning formula so far. Since downing Roxboro Community 3-2 in a tiebreaking fifth game, the Bucs have shut out nonconference Northeast Guilford as well as conference foes Seaforth and Cummings.
Ouzts credits her five seniors – captains Lizzie Proctor, Faith Upchurch and Kaitlyn Oakley, along with Alyna Crumpton and Faith Johnson – with team leadership.
“It's awesome for us to be able to play this year,” Ouzts said. “We didn't play last year because of Covid.”
The Bucs wrap up this week at Graham (0-6) in another conference face off.
