Lelia Rhumineer Fryar Russell

Lelia Rhumineer Fryar Russell, affectionately known as “Rhumneer” was born on March 20, 1930 in Caswell County, North Carolina to the late Roxanna W. Fryar and James L. Fryar.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized as a child. Lelia, was a long time member of the Blackwell Baptist Missionary Church, where she served on the Deaconess Board and many other committees.

Her early education was completed in the Caswell County public school system. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Winston-Salem Teachers College in Winston-Salem, NC and obtained a Master’s Degree from Boston University, in Boston, Massachusetts. She was a long time member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. and the NAACP.

Her professional career in the field of education began in 1950 in the Guilford County School System and she transferred to the Caswell County School System where she was employed for 30 years until her retirement in 1980. Following retirement, she was the Director of the Graves Chapel Day Care Center for eight years.

A lifelong learner, Lelia enjoyed reading and traveling. Additionally, she loved quilting, gardening and spending time with her family.

She was proceeded in death by her brother Pallie Fryar.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Herman Russell; daughter, Daphne Johnson and Son-Law LovRico Johnson; son, Carlton Russell, Daughter-in Law Michelle Russell; one grandson, Myles Russell. And a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2021 from the Blackwell Missionary Baptist Church, 4777 Highway 158, Yanceyville with Dr. Nkrumah D’Angelo Lewis, presiding and Rev. Thomas W. Williamson, Sr., eulogist. 

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Johnson & Sons, 115 Holderby Street and Friday from 1:30 until 2:00 p.m. at the church.
