Howard Lester Hicks, Sr.

Howard Lester Hicks, Sr.

Mr. Howard Lester Hicks, Sr., 71, of Burlington passed away at his residence surrounded by his family on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at 5:24 a.m. following a lengthy courageous battle with cancer.

A native of Caswell County, he was the son of Woodrow Wilson Hicks and Katie Viola Webster Hicks, both deceased. He was a former Quality Control Supervisor. Mr. Hicks was a member of Bula Masonic Lodge #409 AF & AM, the Royal Order of Jesters #186, ASOB, Amran Temple and Past President of Burlington Shrine Club. He was a lifelong member of Union United Methodist Church.

Howard was known for his infectious smile and witty demeanor. He very seldom met a stranger and loved to talk with people. Dad always said regardless of what you have or do not have, it cost nothing to treat people with decency and offer a smile. He was most proud of his children and grandchildren and wanted nothing more than a better opportunity for them. His life experience began being born and raised dirt poor on a farm in Caswell County. Howard knew nothing would come without hard work and self-perseverance, and persevere he did. Dad cherished the friendships and bonds that he forged through the years, especially with the guys from the un-official Burlington Shrine Breakfast Club. He always talked about his “pals” and that kept him going through the most difficult of times. For that the family extends a heartfelt thank you to you all, you know who you are.

Survivors include his daughter, Ashley Hicks Dickson of Burlington; son, Howard Lester “Lee” Hicks, Jr. and wife Marsha of Burlington; four grandchildren, Matthew, Mary and Cora Dickson and Hunter Hicks; a special sister, Teresa Hicks Jones; twin-brother, Harold J. Hicks and wife Teresa; sister, Flo Glenn; and brother, Benny Hicks.

You are invited to pay your respects at Rich & Thompson Funeral and Cremation Service in Burlington on Saturday, November 28, 2020 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.

A memorial service will be conducted at the Rich & Thompson Chapel in Burlington on Sunday, November 29, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. by Rev. David Wood. The family will be at the residence of Lee Hicks.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to AuthoraCare Collective Hospice for the care and compassion given to Howard.
