Joe M. Chandler

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Joe M. Chandler on October 24, 2022. Joe passed away, after a brief illness, at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC with family by his side.

Joe was born to D.O. Chandler, Sr. and Emma Stanfield Chandler on May 23, 1937, in Caswell County, North Carolina. In 1960, he married Patricia Jackson Chandler, whom he met at East Carolina University. After living in Galax, Virginia, Dahlonega Georgia, and several places in North Carolina, they settled in Asheville in 1987.

Together, Joe and Pat raised two children: daughter, June Chandler Baker, Dunwoody, Ga., and son, Jack Chandler (Amy Whitley Chandler), Lincolnton, NC.

Joe is also survived by three wonderful grandchildren who were the joys of his life: Kelly Taylor (Ben), Dunwoody, Ga., Zach Baker, Decatur, Ga., and Kaiti Chandler (Alex Royster), Lincolnton, NC.

He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy C. Harris, Snow Camp, NC and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Joe is preceded in death by a sister Ruby C. Stephens and brothers D.O. Chandler, Jr., and Wilber G. Chandler.

Joe graduated from Anderson High School in 1955, Wingate Junior College in 1957, and East Carolina University in 1960 with a BS in Physical Science.

Joe worked 22 years as Human Resources Manager at several locations for Burlington Industries. For nine years Joe was the Corporate Director of Human Resources at Beacon Blankets in Swannanoa, NC, until his retirement in 1996. Joe was an active member of First Baptist Church of Asheville and thoroughly enjoyed his time in the BASICS Sunday school class.

Joe will be remembered for his undying faith in Jesus, his unfaltering love for his family, and always being ready for a good clean joke. Joe brought joy and laughter to everyone he met right up to his final days. Any remembrance of Joe will be incomplete without mentioning the enjoyment he received from playing golf with his best friends.

A memorial service, to celebrate Joe’s life, will be held in the Chapel of First Baptist Church of Asheville on November 12, 2022 at 2:00 PM. The church is located at 5 Oak Street, Asheville, NC 28801. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Joe’s name to; Bush Arbor Church c/o Susan Newcomb, 900 Oakview Loop, Rd., Yanceyville, NC 27379, or Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607, or to the charity of your choice.
