SAAC wins award for massive food donation

Averett University's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) won the USA South Athletic Conference's 17thAnnual “Cans Across the Conference” food drive competition recently when it helped collect more than 11,300 items to donate locally to God's Storehouse of Danville.

“It is important to help give back to the local community because one of our biggest things here at Averett as student-athletes is community service. We are more than just student-athletes, so we always try to find ways to give back to our community, especially since they are always supporting Averett,” says Zamyiah Mangum, senior volleyball player and Averett SAAC president. “ Our athletics department would not be what it is today without the support of our local community, so whenever we are given the opportunity to benefit the community, we will always take advantage of it.”

With a grand total of 11,361 items, Averett was crowned the “Cans Across the Conference” champion for 2021. The Cougars have now claimed their sixth consecutive competition victory. Averett's collection is the ninth-most gathered in a single year by an institution during the competition.

Drew Wilson, Director of Athletics Communications explains that since 2004 when the USA South's Cans Across the Conference initiative began, Averett alone has collected 117,712 items to donate locally.

“Pfeiffer University collected 3,838 items to finish second while Huntingdon College's 3,658 items rounded out the top-three. Overall, the USA South institutions collected 28,062 items this fall. Over the 17-year history of the program, USA South institutions have donated 603,230 items to various organizations,” he explains.

Since classes began this fall until yesterday, USA South member institutions participated in the community service competition. Each campus SAAC collected cans and other non-perishable items to benefit a local charity of their choosing. The institution with the most items collected is crowned the “Cans Across the Conference” champion.
