North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced the arrest of Jeremiah Randall “J. R.” Whitt, 40, of 140 Hooper Ave., Yanceyville on Monday. Whitt was charged with obtaining property by false pretense.

Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division accuse Whitt of failing to return $5,162.01 in excess funds from a life insurance policy to the estate after burial expenses had been satisfied. Up until the time of his multiple arrests, Whitt was operating Harrelson Funeral Home in Caswell County.

The offense occurred from Sept. 18, 2019, to Sept. 23, 2019.

Special agents arrested Whitt on Nov. 30. He was due in Caswell County District Court on December 8 where he faced a multitude of charges.

“Insurance fraud hurts consumers,” Commissioner Causey said. “Approximately 20% of your insurance premium goes to cover the cost of fraud. That’s why I’m aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
