U.S. Army veteran Franklin Martin, of Eden, North Carolina, was chosen to receive a free new roof Wednesday, September 30, from Skywalker Roofing as part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. "Since the inception of this program in 2016, more than 225 military members have received new roofs," Roof Deployment Project Public Relations Executive Andrew Bowyer said on Thursday morning.
Through a partnership with Purple Heart Homes, Franklin Martin was selected and approved as the recipient for the roof replacement. "We normally work with Habitat for Humanity or Purple Heart homes," Bowyer continued. "We work with charities to identify veterans in need."
In a conversation with Skywalker Roofing owner Luke Wilson on Friday morning, he explained that only platinum contractors can participate in this “great project.” He elaborated that Frank Martin was a perfect candidate to be selected due to his service in the Army where he served as a medic in Germany for three years. “Mr. Martin's wife is suffering with terminal cancer so this was an emotional day for our team. The couple was actually leaving to go to a radiation treatment when we got there.”
Wilson adds that the shingle roof they put on the couple's home was made of superior materials and should last them the rest of their lives “and maybe the next generation.”
He estimates that the roof would normally cost around $8,000-10,000. “Owens Corning only uses the best materials and I would put it on my own home,” he shared.
Skywalker Roofing normally does around four projects a year with Owens Corning and additional projects on their own with No Roof Left Behind. “Helping the community is important,” he says.
The Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project is a nationwide effort to show gratitude and honor the veterans who served our country and the families who support them. "We do these all over the country," Bowyer said. "With nice weather, we normally do about two or three per week." This project was delayed twice due to inclement weather, from September 10 to Sept. 17 to Sept. 30. The Owens Corning Foundation donated the roofing materials and Skywalker Roofing donated the labor, Bowyer said. Skywalker is an Owens Corning Platinum Roofing Contractor. The workers started the project at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning at 2979 Price Grange Road in Eden, North Carolina.
The project was finished by the end of the day Wednesday.
