Rick McVey was voted 2022 Chairman of the Caswell County Board of Commissioners at Monday’s meeting, replacing David Owen. Commissioner Owen was then voted Vice Chairman for the new year, replacing Jeremiah Jeffries.

Ernestine Hamlett, who often speaks at board meetings during the public comments period was the only speaker on Monday. She thanked Commissioner Nate Hall and former Vice Chairman Jeremiah Jeffries for voting against the recent motion to leave monuments as they are in Town Square. The motion passed to not make changes in the removal of monuments including the Confederate statue.

“They displayed true leadership. I was disappointed with the action. Chairman David Owen did not vote (he left a ZOOM meeting before the vote due to health reasons). Is he going to vote?”

She also pointed out that commissioners can speak as long as they like on any topic while public commentators are limited to three minutes. “Can it be extended to six minutes?”

Hamlett pointed out that a cost for redesign of Town Square appeared to play a role in the way the vote turned out. She said she talked to County Manager Bryan Miller about the topic being brought up again in the future.
