Having won four of five overall, and four straight in conference play, the Barlett Yancey baseball team is heating up.

The Bucs have outscored their previous four conference opponents 50-5 and hold a 6-2 conference record that is good enough for third place in the Mid-State 2A Conference.

What's more, is that the Bucs have a game left with both the first and second place teams in the conference, the North Carolina School of Science and Math, and Reidsville, respectively, and those two teams played after our deadline on Tuesday night. In other words, the Bucs still have a decent shot of winning the conference.

Last week, the Bucs traveled down to Carrboro and beat the Jaguars 7-0 on the strength of lights out pitching from Cameron Upchurch and Blake Solomon. The pair combined for a one-hit shoutout down in Orange County.

The offensive attack in Carrboro was led by Keith Mims and Colby Solomon, who had two hits apiece. Blake Solomon helped his own cause by driving in two runs.

The next night the Bucs hosted Graham and blew the Red Devils out, 14-1. Junior Alex Pruitt got the ball for the Bucs and allowed just the one earned run across three innings of work. Freshman Clay Haigh made a relief appearance and tossed two spotless frames, allowing one walk while striking out two.

Junior Micah New smashed a dinger for the home team and Chase Johnson swatted a double. New had four RBI in the contest while Colby Solomon contributed three.

The Bucs hosted Durham School of the Arts last night after our deadline, and will host Cummings as well in a doubleheader that is being played due to the rainout.
