BY junior captain and utility player Emma Jones readies for a serve in the opening set of the Bucs' matchup against cross-county and conference rival Reidsville Tuesday night. BY improved to 3-1 on the season with a straight-set sweep of the Rams.

Bartlett Yancey senior defensive specialist Mattie Wrenn commented at the end of BY’s preseason camp that one of the Bucs’ main goals was to defeat cross-county and Mid-State 2A rival Reidsville.

Wrenn and BY wasted little time in achieving their goal.

Bartlett Yancey cruised 25-10 in the opening set and never looked back in a 3-0 win over Reidsville Tuesday.

The opening minutes of the first set had all the makings of a rivalry game as each side furiously traded points.

However, senior Lanie Ouzts and junior Ashlyn Sheppard gave BY (3-1, 1-0 Mid-State) a little breathing room from the serving line, each recording consecutive points on serves to help the Buccaneers take an 11-4 lead. That was all the space the Bucs needed as they rode the momentum to a 15-point win in the opening set.

BY doubled down in the following set, defeating Reidsville, 25-12. The Bucs completed the straight-set win with a 25-13 win over the Rams in the third and final frame.

Sheppard led BY offensively, recording a team-high six kills on 10 attempts. Sophomore Elizabeth Proctor continued her recent offensive tear, driving home five kills on eight attempts. Sheppard and Emma Jones each recorded a team-best five kills, while Ouzts and Wrenn each chipped in with four.

Jones led BY defensively with six digs, while sophomore Faith Upchurch drilled home three.
