COVID-19 has put a damper on the traditional Memorial Day celebrations, but local groups are determined to honor area veterans in some slightly untraditional ways this year.
To kick things off, on Sunday, May 24, a special event to honor all the veterans who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of our freedoms will be held on the square in Yanceyville at 2 PM. During the drive thru around the square in downtown Yanceyville, veterans will be handing out 12 X 18 American flags to the first 100 vehicles with all other occupants receiving a small flag like those given to everyone at Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies.
Also at 3 PM, there will be a special prayer by Pastor Jim Davis at Yanceyville Presbyterian Church. Patriotic music will be played from the church following the National Anthem kicking things off at 3:15 - 5 PM.
Veterans can salute the flag on the square, all others put your hand over your heart to show respect for the flag and for the fallen.Come drive thru, get your flags, park if you like, and turn your radio to 97.7 for the music.
Please use the state social distancing guidelines in effect on that date.
This event is sponsored by Caswell Senior Center, VFW 7316, and American Legion Post 89.
On Monday, May 25, the American Legion Unit and Post 210 will have a Wreath Lying Ceremony at 10 AM at the site of the proposed Veterans Memorial, 139 E. Church Street (across from the Caswell County Courthouse).
The program will honor and remember those who served our country and have gone on to glory. Reverend Arthur Greer II ( US Army Veteran), pastor of Yanceyville Baptist Church, will be the Honored Guest Speaker.
Social Distances will be in place and all guests are requested to wear face coverings. Limited seating will be available. For more information, please contact Naomi Totten at 336-694-5595.
