Alivia Mims from Bartlett Yancey Senior High School recently placed sixth place in the nation in the Virtual Beta Club Convention. The original plans were to travel to Texas to compete against all the other states in the Division 2 Speech competition. Her plaque has not been delivered as of yet, but will be coming soon.
She also placed second in the North Carolina State Beta Club Convention and is pictured with her plaque.
“My speech was about the unreasonable beauty standards social media has set and how it is affecting the lives of our teenagers. I, as a teenage girl, struggle with my body image due to social media showing these “perfect” models. I wrote the speech in hopes that it would encourage those who struggle with how they see themselves and those who compare themselves to models. Social media is toxic and we shouldn’t have to constantly change ourselves because society says we should look skinny or have perfect hair,” she explains.
She is also the Beta Club President at Bartlett Yancey.
Her motto is: I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else. ~C.S Lewis
